ENGL 203 - Introduction to English Drama 3

This course is a study of selected and representative plays of different periods. Added to broadening the student’s understanding and appreciation of literature, The chief aim of the course is to develop the student’s critical thinking and analysis and to encourage original responses to literary expression in well-developed oral and written criticism. Co-requisite: English 210.

ENGL 213 - Creative Writing 3

This course introduces students to the process and practice of imaginative writing. Students will read works of fiction, creative nonfiction and poetry, and will learn techniques for writing in those genres.

ENGL 214 - Introduction to English Poetry 3

This course introduces freshman students to poets whose poetry is of intrinsic literary merit. In addition to broadening the students’ understanding and appreciation of literature, the chief aim of the course is to develop the student’s critical thinking and analysis and to encourage original responses to literary expression in well-developed oral and written criticism. Co-requisite: English 210.

ENGL 215 - Introduction to American Literature 3

This is a course which explores the works of major literary figures and authors representing different literary schools from the sixteenth century to modern times. Students will closely examine selected texts as literary achievements and set them within the historical context and framework of American culture. Co-requisite: English 210.

ENGL 220 - Introduction to Literature 3

This course is an introduction to literature through works of fiction, poetry, and drama. It introduces students to the pleasures of reading literature and to interpretative approaches to literature. It aims to provide students with competence in critical thinking and practice in close reading and analysis, knowledge of the formal characteristics of each genre, and appreciation of literary excellence. Readings include a variety of short stories, poems and plays selected from a wide range of British, American and World literature. Co-requisite: English 210.

ENGL 230 - Shakespeare’s Plays 3

In this course, students study representative comedies, histories, and tragedies by Shakespeare. The plays are read intensively and understood in the context of the theatrical conventions of the period and the culture of play going in early modern England, as well as the social, cultural, religious, and intellectual history of the period. Co-requisite: English 210.

FADR 215 - History of Art 3

This course explores the major forms of artistic expression from the ancient world to the present from a variety of cultural perspectives. Students learn how to look at and analyze works of art within their historical context, and how to articulate what they see or experience in a meaningful way. This course covers Pre- Renaissance, Renaissance, Post Renaissance and the rich layers of 19th and 20th Century Modern Art up until the manifestations of our present day.

HIST 210 - History of England 3

This broad survey course provides a narrative of British history from 1066 through the present, including political, social and cultural developments. Prerequisite: ENGL 210.

HIST 350 - History of the Arabs in the Classical Period 3

This is an elective course whose major objectives are to familiarize students with the Arab peoples’ history. The course’s emphasis will be to explain: The early Arab conquests of Bilad al-Sham, Egypt, Persia, North Africa, the internal civil strife inside the early Muslim community, the emergence and development of the Umayyad caliphate, and the emergence and development of the Abbasid Empire. Co-requisite: ENGL 210.

HIST 360 - Contemporary History 3

This is an elective course whose major objectives are to familiarize students with contemporary issues in order to enhance their level from historical and cultural points of view. Co-requisite: ENGL 210.

HIST 365 - History of Europe in the Middle East 3

This course examines the ties between Europe and the Middle East in the 19th and 20th centuries, focusing on the reaction of Middle Eastern societies to European intervention and influence. Co-requisite: ENGL 210.

HIST 370 - The Economic and Social History of the Middle East 3

This is an elective course whose main objective is to familiarize students with various events that shaped the evolution of social and economic developments of the Middle East to enhance their level from the historical and economical dimensions. Co-requisite: ENGL 210.

PHIL 301 - Major Trends in Philosophy 3

This is a study of some major topics in philosophy. The course emphasizes theory of knowledge, theory of mind, determinism and free will, and morality and ethical values. Along with some assigned readings, students will watch movies, the analysis of which will help them comprehend the content of the course better. Co-requisite: ENGL 210.

PHIL 302 - Introduction to Formal Logic 3

This course is a standard introduction to the formal techniques of argument analysis. Formal logic was invented to mirror and evaluate mathematical reasoning; however, this course will concentrate on the relationship between formal logic and everyday reasoning and consequently language usage in general. Co-requisite: ENGL 210.

PHIL 303 - Introduction to Ethics 3

People often wonder about what makes good ways to live and right ways to act. They also speculate about what is the best way of life, what action is right, and what sort of authority moral claims have over us. The course introduces students to the major moral theories and thinkers that address these types of questions. Co-requisite: ENGL 210.

PHIL 307 - Business Ethics 3

This course is an introduction to contemporary philosophical thinking on ethical issues in business. Students will be exposed to important ethical issues they might face; asked to give sound ethical judgment to problems they might face in their line of work; helped become armed with a set of codes that will prepare them to confront and resolve ethical dilemmas they might encounter at work; and enabled to apply the techniques for analyzing and resolving ethical problems when they arise Co-requisite: ENGL 210.

PHIL 310 - Philosophers of Peace 3

This course introduces students to peace building and conflict prevention through the examination of the main theories on peace and security. It examines ideas of Thucydides, Aristotle, Erasmus Grotius, Kant, Gandhi and other thinkers for whole peace was a high value. It develops students’ critical skills and understanding necessary to translate their academic learning to specific practical situations, such those posed by peace building either with the UN, governments, or NGOs. It helps to understand the complex and interconnected challenges to peace and provides knowledge to meet these challenges. Co-requisite: ENGL 210.

CCEE 534 - Signal Processing 2

This course covers time series analysis, frequency analysis, time-frequency and time-scale analysis. It also covers the design of digital filters and signal modeling. Prerequisite: CCEE 231.

ENGR 600 - Engineering Research Methods 3

This course introduces students to quantitative and qualitative methods for engaging in meaningful research. The student, at the end of the course, will attain skills in research intent and design, methodology and technique, format and presentation, and data management. Throughout the course, the student’s ability to use this knowledge to become a more effective researcher will be developed. In particular, the student will be able to develop a hypothesis about a research problem and develop related questions; frame the problem with the correct research methodology; collect data that accurately addresses the research problem; measure the effectiveness of a solution methodology; analyze data to make informed decisions; provide technical documentation of all the phases of a research project; evaluate feasibility of research proposals; and present data to support decisions in front of stakeholders.

ELEC 690 - Capstone Research Project 3

A capstone course requiring group work in one of the emphasis areas offered by the Department. The project is to be carried out under the supervision of a full-time faculty member and culminated in a formal written and oral report (refer to college guidelines related to graduation projects structure and content). Prerequisite: Accepted petition to graduate.

ELEC 533 - Advanced Machines and Drives 3

This course is concerned with the design, construction and performance of electrical machines in modern control systems. Topics will normally include the following: stepping motors; variable-reluctance, permanent-magnet, and hybrid types; excitation and drive circuits. Induction motors; dynamics, voltage-fed and current-fed operation, vector control. Permanent-magnet motors; AC and brushless-DC types. Switched reluctance motors Prerequisite: ELEC 331. Annually.

ELEC 534 - Advanced Power Systems 3

Three-phase circuits. Inductance and capacitance of transmission lines. Circuit models. Per-unit representation. Network methods. Load-flow studies. Load-flow control. Economic dispatch. Symmetrical three-phase faults. Unsymmetrical faults. Power system stability. Power system protection. Computer methods. Prerequisite: ELEC 330. Annually.

ELEC 550 - Advanced Control Systems 3

Formulation of the linear control problem by state space methods; Frequency response and time response analysis; Concepts of controllability, observability, canonical forms, state transition matrices, stability; State-Feedback controller design; Full-order observer design; Reduced-order observer design; Nonlinear systems linearization; Single-Input Single-Output, continuous, discrete and time-invariant systems are considered; Introduction to Multiple-Input Multiple-Output systems. Prerequisite: ELEC 451. Annually.

ELEC 595A - BE Summative Learning Project 1 3

First phase of a team-oriented, project-based experience that culminates in the creation of an artifact; milestones include: project selection and proposal, creative solution, report, presentation, and demonstration of the created device. Prerequisite: ENGL 217.

ELEC 595B - BE Summative Learning Project 2 3

Second phase of a team-oriented, project-based experience that culminates in the creation of an artifact; milestones include: project selection and proposal, creative solution, report, presentation, and demonstration of the created device. Prerequisite: ELEC 595A.

Technical Electives (24 cr.)

ELEC 611 - Computer Modeling of Electrical Power Systems 3

This course is intended to teach electrical engineering students how to simulate the changing states of electrical power systems by studying the performance and predicting the disturbances of the power system boosted by the FACTS. It describes the mathematical background, algorithms and the basic tools needed to simulate interconnected complex power systems and likely response to different types of network pathologies or disturbances.

ELEC 612 - Electric Power System Control 3

This is a course on the structure of modern power systems, the different levels of control, and the nature of stability problems. The course will introduce students to the generators, excitation systems, prime movers, ac and dc transmission, and system loads as well as the principles of active and reactive power control, and models for control equipment.

ELEC 621 - Renewable Energy Resources and Technologies 3

This course covers renewable energy technologies from the engineering point of view: applications, engineering calculations and design, feasibility and so on. The main aim of the course is to provide the student with a systematic understanding of current knowledge, problems and insight into the field of renewable energy technologies.

ELEC 622 - The Smart Grid 3

The use of communications and information technologies is likely to cause major shifts in the way energy gets delivered. The smart grid will use these technologies to deliver electricity reliably and efficiently, and it has the potential to radically change the electricity sector in the same way that new technologies changed the telecommunications sector. This course will examine not just the smart grid technologies, but the transformational impacts of the smart grid on the industry. Students in this course will learn the fundamentals of the smart grid: its purpose and objectives, its technologies, its architectures, and its management. Students will also learn many of the challenges facing the smart grid as part of its evolution.

ELEC 631 - Digital Control 3

This course is a comprehensive introduction to digital control system analysis and synthesis. The course covers analysis and synthesis of sampled-data control systems. It capitalizes on the knowledge of the student in Classical Control to extend classical methods for analysis and synthesis of digital control systems. The course also introduces digital control methods which are not based on classical control theory.

ELEC 632 - Nonlinear Adaptive Control 3

This course presents a comprehensive exposition of the theory of nonlinear dynamical systems and its control. It will focus on (1) methods of characterizing and understanding the behavior of systems that can be described by nonlinear ordinary differential equations, and (2) methods for designing controllers for such systems. In the design parts we will focus on the nonlinear robust adaptive control. Both classical and modern concepts from nonlinear system theory will be introduced.

ELEC 406 - Modeling and Simulation 3

The aim of this course is to teach the students the concept of representing, characterizing, understanding, analyzing or solving real world problem through modeling and simulation. In this course, students are introduced to the tools and techniques used to model and simulate different systems varying from basic circuits to more advanced and complex technical systems found in various engineering domains. Prerequisite: ELEC 210.

ELEC 425 - Switching 3

This course focuses on switches (types and characteristics) as well as the concept of switching and its applications such as DC-DC converters, AC/AC converters, rectifiers, inverters, switch mode power supplies. The course covers both single phase and three phase converters. Prerequisite: PHYS 211.

ELEC 433 - High Voltage Engineering 3

Introduction to high voltage engineering, withstand levels, S curves; insulation coordination; breakdown mechanisms. Non-destructive testing of apparatus; insulation resistance, partial discharge, measurements HV production for test objects. System over-voltages, switching, lightning and over-voltage protection devices. Prerequisite: PHYS 211.

ELEC 434 - Electrical Power Distribution 3

General considerations; load characteristics; sub-transmission and distribution substations; primary and secondary distribution, secondary network systems; distribution transformers; voltage regulation and application of capacitors; voltage fluctuations; protective device coordination. Prerequisite: PHYS 211.

ELEC 444 - Electromagnetic Compatibility 3

Introduction to Electromagnetic Interference, Conducted and Radiated Emission, Conducted and Radiated Susceptibility, Product slippage. EMC standards and Regulations. EMC Theory and Materials Relating to EMC design. EMC Measurement and test facilities. Prerequisite: ELEC 210.

ELEC 498 - Special Topics in Electrical Engineering 3

This course is designed to enable students to study current special topics of interest which are carefully selected from ELEC-related topics. The contents of such a course are to be determined by the instructor and the department.

ELEC 503 - Artificial Neural Systems 3

This course focuses on the foundations of neural network theory and the application of neural network models in engineering, cognitive science, and artificial intelligence. The course will present the major neural network paradigms: attractor neural network models of memory, a sequence of supervised learning models of increasing complexity, a sequence of unsupervised clustering and categorization networks, reinforcement learning networks, and aspects of learning theory. Foundations of learning machines and neural processing algorithms: supervised and unsupervised learning of feed forward and recurrent neural networks, perception layers, associative memories, feature maps.

ELEC 504 - Lasers and Laser Applications in Engineering 3

This course is designed to give students a functional knowledge in lasers. The course begins with an introduction to light, atoms, absorption processes, and spontaneous and simulated emission of radiation. Next, laser types and characteristics are discussed. Laser sources, resonators, and amplifiers are discussed. In addition, applications in engineering, technology, and biomedical field applications will be discussed.
