The Mission for Powering Lebanon (M.Powering Lebanon), a nonprofit organization registered in Texas, USA, has been launched on January 2nd, by its three founding directors, two of whom are RHU alumnae residing in the USA: Abla Hariri (Class 2014 Electrical Engineering, Texas) and Hiba Habli (Class 2014 Computer Science, Florida). In addition, Sandra Whitehead (Wisconsin), who taught at RHU for almost 7 years in the past, serves as an editorial consultant to the organization.
As a start, the team at M.Powering Lebanon have organized international fundraising campaigns to provide sustainable electricity sources like solar panels to households in urgent need of a constant supply of electricity, such as people who have medical conditions requiring electric-powered devices. Their first fundraiser, Mission Youssef, ensures life-saving electricity to a toddler named Youssef. They are also planning the expansion of their efforts until everyone in Lebanon has a source of reliable, affordable electricity.
As many of you may know, recurring political deadlocks in Lebanon have long impeded any progress or serious reforms to the electricity sector among many others. The Lebanese people face daily power outages that last many hours, and they have lived with this for years.
To some, like people who have medical conditions requiring electric-powered devices, the blackouts are not just a nuisance; they are a matter of life or death.
