On April 17, 2024, the ASCE RHU Student Chapter in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department participated in a gathering organized by the ASCE Lebanon Section at the American University of Beirut. The students and society advisors of different universities were welcomed and allowed to network. The event included a workshop that aimed to introduce the pressing issue of climate change and its impact on civil engineering infrastructure and resilience.
The objective of the workshop was to immerse civil engineering students in the complexities of urban climate adaptation planning. Through real-world data, stakeholder perspectives, and financial constraints, students gained insights into the important role of civil engineers and the collaborative efforts required to make cities like Beirut more resilient to climate change.
The students were divided into groups and given Role Cards and Decision Cards. They reviewed their role cards, wrote down their arguments, and discussed their strategies, considering their stakeholders’ perspectives and objectives. Finally, teams chose an adaptation strategy from the decision cards, justifying their choices based on effectiveness, stakeholder impact, and cost. They also considered long-term sustainability and potential climate scenarios.
The ASCE RHU students found the workshop on climate change to be very interesting. They thank ASCE Lebanon and AUB for organizing the gathering event.
