Celebrating Innovation and Excellence: Biomedical Engineering Day at RHU

On Wednesday, December 11th, 2024, the IEEE-EMBS RHU Chapter, in collaboration with the RHU Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Biomedical Engineering Program, led by Dr. Mohamad Diab, proudly hosted Biomedical Engineering Day. The event celebrated the remarkable achievements of our students, showcasing cutting-edge biomedical research and final-year student projects that demonstrate the pinnacle of academic excellence and innovation. Among the projects were an AI-driven, voice-dependent and EMG-controlled bionic arm, an EEG-controlled wheelchair, age-related biomarker detection from EEG signals, and automated liver segmentation and tumor detection using U-Net.

Two of these projects were the result of highly productive collaborations with esteemed French institutions—Université de Technologie de Troyes and MinDig Neuroscience Research Company in Rennes—mentored by RHU alumna Dr. Racha Soubra and Dr. Mahmoud Hassan. These partnerships highlight the global reach of our educational programs and the opportunities our students have to work with leading experts in the field.

The event underscored the transformative impact of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning technologies in revolutionizing healthcare. It provided attendees with valuable insights into the practical applications of these technologies, offering a deeper understanding of their potential to reshape the future of the field. More importantly, the event served as a source of inspiration for students, illustrating how to approach, execute, and excel in their own final-year projects, reinforcing our commitment to fostering excellence in education and empowering students to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of biomedical engineering.
