RHU Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department kicked off its series of community outreach workshops for high school students for the academic year 2022/2023. Around 45 students from Damour Official High School, Iklim High School, Makased Omar Bin AL Khattab, Hariri II High School, and Hariri III High School attended the first two ECE workshops on November 19, 2022, in the beautiful RHU campus in Mechref, between 9 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
The workshops are being held to serve the community, spread technical knowledge, and introduce students to the ABET accredited electrical (ELEC), biomedical (BIOM), and computer and communication engineering (CCE) programs in the RHU College of Engineering.
The workshops started with a presentation about the ECE Department and the computer and communications engineering program by the ECE Chairperson, Dr. Dina Serhal. Dr. Mohamad Diab and Dr. Rached Zantout later introduced the students to the RHU biomedical engineering and electrical engineering programs.
After a short coffee break, the students split into two groups. The first group attended a hands-on workshop with ECE Lab Engineer Ms. Milana Kassab. She guided them to implement a heart rate monitor connected to a phone App.
The second group attended a hands-on workshop with ECE Lab Engineer Ms. Amal Al Arid. They learned how to implement an Internet of Things (IoT) surveillance system connected to the cloud through a phone App.
Current RHU ECE students from all three programs, electrical, biomedical, and computer and communications engineering, assisted the high school students. At the end of the workshops, high school students expressed their appreciation for the information and hands-on experience they got during the workshop. They were impressed with the level of knowledge RHU 2nd year and 3rd year ECE students possess even before graduation.
The day ended with a tour of the campus, in which students appreciated the beauty of the RHU campus.
