RHU Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department hosted Dr. Ziad Al Bawab, senior applied scientist in the speech services group at Microsoft, on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at RHU. The event, entitled “FYP and Career Profile,” was organized as part of a series of lectures delivered to ECE students registered in the Summative Learning Project (SLP) courses.
During his intervention at RHU, Dr. Al Bawab explained how data science is shaping the world we live in and touching on many applications we use daily. In this talk, he briefly discussed final year project basics for senior students in computer engineering. He provided an overview of data science and applied machine learning field. He also presented Cortana’s latest work on the detection of emphasis in users’ voice queries in the context of Cortana, Microsoft's personal assistant.
He is based in Sunnyvale California. His expertise includes speech recognition and applied machine learning. He received his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University in 2009 and masters from UCLA in 2003 both in electrical and computer engineering. Dr. Ziad received his bachelors in computer and communications engineering from AUB in 2001 and has worked at several research labs including Yahoo! Labs and Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs.
