RHU has launched the Sustainable Campus Initiative (SCI) toward a sustainable campus. One of the mainstays of the SCI is to contrive a solid waste management plan (SWMP) to achieve a zero-waste campus goal. The SWMP involves collecting, sorting and tracking the source of commingled waste, and composting organic matter. A memorandum of understanding was signed with Arcenciel to move the recyclable items to a local recycling facility twice a week. The SWMP effort is championed by RHU faculty, staff and students who launched the process on February 27.
RHU President announced the SWMP in a communication to faculty, staff and students, by noting that pollution knows no boundaries and has no preference to a faith, region or position in a pecking order! The fact that we all are equal preys to this crushing madness should be the rallying cry to unite our purpose and if we do the little things right, the big things will take care of themselves. He then exhorted RHU faculty, staff and students to work toward making RHU a shining example of community-driven solution.
To facilitate the collection and separation process, transparent bins are installed in all campus buildings. Separate bins are also installed to collect batteries, pens, lighters and other plastic artifacts. An awareness campaign is underway to continuously improve participation toward the desired zero waste goal.
