World Down Syndrome Day at RHU

Individuals with Down Syndrome are special. They possess a unique intelligence that enables them to think, behave and appreciate life as others do. RHU reflected this during RHU Down Syndrome Day organized by RHU Student Affairs in collaboration with I’dad Association on March 21. The event emphasized the need to change the way people with Down Syndrome are looked upon in society.

The event served to point out clearly how those individuals are regarded and increased the audience’s compassion and understanding of their needs.  RHU students were able to interact and encourage them. They became thoughtful and more considerate of their feelings and appreciative of their abilities.

Students from I’dad introduced themselves and how they are viewed differently. “We are all the same; Our IDs do not indicate that we suffer from Down syndrome.” Another said:   “I am just like you and I have a name like yours. I am not a burden nor a threat. I have being bullied ever since I was a kid. People kept their children away from me-the unpredictable child. Just like you all, I have a dream, I have hopes and I have fantasies, so why should I be treated differently? I am capable of performing many tasks and I will not let anyone put me down because I look different.”
